This year is one of the biggest for the Los Alamitos High School track team. They have a strong group of sprinters and distance runners to help them earn the Sunset League Championship this year. There are many that are helping the team this year and the athlete who is turning everyone’s head this year is the school’s 400M record holder is Junior Sprinter Ashley Willingham. Along with having the girls Varsity 400M record at 56.69, she also ran the lead leg for the record breaking 4 x 100M team last year with a time of 48.40. Ashley has always been a young woman that has pushed herself to become the best she can be. From her competing in dance over the past five years to her maintaining a 4.0 GPA through her time at Los Al high school, she has always wanted more for herself.
Before Ashley started training at our facility back in February of 2012, she attended a couple of our Summer Soccer Camps in 2009 & 2010. It was there that our Soccer Coach Brittany noticed that she had lots of potential that needed some training and positive motivation to help Ashley release her competitive nature. Within these past three years she has grown to become one of the dominating forces on the Girls Los Al Track team. This year she has started off great with a 57.98 in the 400M during her first Tri-Meet last week and this past weekend she was able to get her time down to a 57.76 at the Redondo Nike Invitational track meet. She was able to place 5th in the standings out of a field of over forty girls in her event. With her performance during her first couple of meets this season, Ashley is on course to break her 400M record form last year. Her eyes have always been set on becoming a student at Stanford University ever since I have known her. The amount of work and effort that she puts in on a daily basis will make her dreams of being on the Stanford Track team come true.
With this being her Junior year, I feel that Ashley will be able to not only run past her 400M record but become the 2015 C.I.F. Track & Field 400M State Champion. There is a very tough field in the Girls 400M this year and I know that Ashley has has the mental strength as well as the physically capabilities of raising up to run down anyone who is out in front. She has developed into an athlete that continues to focus on her goals and has the determination equal to any professional athlete. This year is planning out to be one of the best for Los Alamitos track and as well as for Ashley on and off the track. The Southern Section has an extreme amount of competition for the Girls 400M this year and Ashley is one of the top competitors in the state. When you add up all of her accomplishments on and off the track, I truly am proud to have been an intricate part of her growth and development during these past three years. I wish her well with the rest of the season and will continue to guide her as she inches closer to breaking her 400M record once again along with her 400M State Championship.
