Quick Points to Achieve Your Goals

Quick Points to Achieve Your Goals

By: Jason Fyda, BS, CSCS

“Many people fail in life, not for lack of ability or brains or even courage but simply because they have never organized their energies around a goal.” – Elbert Hubbard

Do you ever wonder how some people seem to attain nearly everything that they wanted?

Those people are no different than you and I. In fact, we are or are capable of being those people. The difference between succeeding or floundering in failure is clear and specific goal setting. Conducting an honest self-assessment is very important to goal-setting; what do I do well? what don’t I do well? What has worked for me before? and what do I need to improve on?

Goals should be S.M.A.R.T.

Specific- What EXACTLY do you want?

Measurable- Set standards to attain.

Attainable-Make sure your goals are something that YOU can accomplish!

Realistic- Must be sincere.

Time-bound- Set a date for attainment.

Once you know what you want, how are you going to get there? Draw yourself a map starting from your destination to your current state. If you want to be twenty pounds lighter, how do you wind up there? What do you need to do daily to be closer to your in goal in 8 weeks? Do you need to exercise daily, eat healthy, drink plenty of water, meditate etc? Remember your goals can be related to anything, not just fitness. These can be for example, being a better wife, husband, parent, achieving straight A’s,or recovering from disease or addiction.

Now that you know what your daily goals are, you should have a list somewhere that you will see it every day (mornings work great!)! Commit yourself completely to your goals. They are your goals and you own them. You may not attain your goal by your deadline, and that is alright.  You may have bit off a little more than you could chew. When this happens re-assess and determine where you went wrong. Re-set your goals accordingly and continue to love and enjoy life!
