Nutrition for Youth Athletes: Snack, Pre-Game, Tournament Meal Suggestions

Why is nutrition important for our athletes?

Athletes of all ages are like machines; they need the proper fuel to function properly. It is very important to monitor not only what the athletes are fueling themselves with but also when they are doing so. With proper nutrition the athlete will:

1) Increase Performance by Increasing Energy Levels

2) Reduce Risk of Injury

3) Accelerate Muscle Recovery

4) Decrease Body Fat Percentage

5) Increase Strength

Some examples of good food choices are shown below. You will also find a few benefits of encouraging your athletes to ‘Eat the Rainbow.’  As adults it is our responsibility to lead our young athletes by example. If you find your child having difficulty with eating foods you have already tried, get creative. Start to eat new fruits and vegetables that maybe you yourself haven’t tried.
